Living Large in the Huntsville Exurbs

All major metropolitan areas have a number of bedroom communities just outside the suburbs known as the Exurbs. These commuter towns have sprung up all over the country and even the rise in fuel prices over the last few years have not deterred their popularity and growth. What is it about the exurbs that continue draw families to make them their home?

Even in mid sized markets like the Huntsville Real Estate market we are seeing ‘share a ride’ commuter parking lots spring up around the metro area as far as 30-40 minutes outside of the city. These towns and parts of the county come from an agricultural heritage, but are now beginning to burst with large lot subdivisions and a growing population of commuters with recent census figures estimating that 6-7% of those working in the city are driving home to the exurbs every evening.  An interesting phenomenon of our own local Huntsville exurbs is also the recent addition of lush golf course communities.

So what is the attraction? Some will say it’s a lower crime rate, others the local schools, and still others will say they simply prefer small town life. However from the perspective of real estate I would have to say one of the largest benefits that attract home buyers is more than likely acreage, larger lots, and simply more home for the money when compared to the nearby metro areas.
 
One need only make a comparison of homes for sale in Meridianville AL, Harvest AL real estate, or take a look at Athens AL homes for sale to name only a few of Huntsville’s exurbs, to see the stark differences in property attributes and cost, compared with their metro area counterparts. Love them or hate them, the exurbs are likely here to stay and are playing an increasing role in shaping America's cultural landscape.
