A New HGTV Show To Catch

I've suggested sellers watch certain television programs relating to real estate and home selling, I'm excited about a new HGTV decorating show that will air tonight at 9:00 p.m.   The show is called Color Splash and stars the winner of Design Star, David Bromstad.

I was hooked on Design Star and I liked David from the beginning.  When it got down to David and another aspiring designer, Alice Fakier, it was a tough decision as I liked both of them.  There was just something about David, though.

David started out a little shy, in my opinion, but a genuinely nice guy.  He even got some constructive criticism about his presentations (not the design but his television skills).  He is from Minnesota but moved to Florida to become a Disney animator by attending the Ringling School of Arts and Design.  He changed his mind and the rest is history.  I wish him much success with the show and I'm hoping it can be another one I can recommend to my sellers.

When I first saw him on Design Star he seemed friendly and genuine.  Seems like he's now being promoted with a beefcake image, decorating shirtless with his chiseled body on display.  What a great idea!  And I love his take on it, "I'm working.  I'm sweaty.  I'm a sweater.  We're from Miami.  We don't keep our clothes on."  Just another reason to watch!

Here are some other HGTV shows I recommend to sellers:
  • Buy Me = At first I thought this would be too phony but it seems to show some real life sales problems which usually show that stubborn sellers are the main reason a home doesn't sell.  It also shows how the agent gets the blame when a seller is being unrealistic.  Some of the properties end up selling and I was happy to see some shows ending without a sale.
  • Curb Appeal = Although I wouldn't expect a seller to spend the kind of money going into these exterior makeovers, it should still give a seller the idea that making some easy and inexpensive changes could make a big impact.
  • Designed to Sell = This is a show I would hope any seller would watch (unless they have a beautiful home already).  Again, even though the show has a $2,000 budget, the labor is free so for the average home owner some of the remodels would be twice as much.  However, it once again explains simple and less expensive changes that make a huge difference and could make your home look so much better.
  • Hidden Potential = This is a newer show that is quite interesting.  It shows buyers how an inexpensive home could be turned into their dream house within their budget.  Buyers go through some small and otherwise "nasty" homes only to be shown the hidden gem with a little remodeling.  The money quoted for the updates seems more realistic than the shows with small budgets that do not include labor.  An example would be a buyer with a price limit of $500,000.  They're shown a house at $350,000 that they don't like.  They are then shown, via computer, what the home would look like with $150,000 worth of work.  The home is beautiful and still within their budget.  Of course, my only question is building the remodeling in to the mortgage.  This is usually a special kind of mortgage.
  • House Hunters = Although you wouldn't necessarily think a seller should watch this, it's great for sellers.  They see how buyers respond to different homes.  They hear firsthand buyer comments on outdated kitchens and baths, small rooms, bad paint jobs, etc.  It also shows buyers comparing different homes in their price range and they explain why they chose the one they ended up purchasing.

  • My House is Worth What? = The premise is that a real estate agent goes through a property to give a real market analysis.  It shows the expectations of the sellers and the reality of the home value in today's market.  Usually, the sellers are happy with the price, sometimes they're not.  The agent goes into detail of why the property is worth a certain price.

  • Other good shows for sellers that show inexpensive updates are 24 Hour Design, Debbie Travis Painted House, Decorating Cents, Design on a Dime, Divine Design, Get Color! and I'm sure there's more.
I have personally learned some home staging tips from watching these shows and I always pass these along to my sellers.  I try to have my sellers show their homes to the best potential without spending too much money.
