Take Me Off Your Mailing List

I got an interesting call the other day.  It was from a woman who didn't sound too friendly asking me to take her off my mailing list.  So I asked her what her e-mail address was wondering why she didn't choose the opt-out feature vs. making a phone call.  She said it wasn't an e-mail.  Then she said in a somewhat exasperated voice, "I keep getting stuff from you in the mail."

I almost laughed.  In fact I think I did chuckle as I told her, in a nice way, that she was the first person to ever call me about sending snail mail.  She was either an expired or fsbo that I send a series of postcards and my newsletters to.  I didn't even have time to do it last year but have been successful in the past so decided to start it up again since it's been a slower start in 2008.

I have a feeling that she was trying to tell me that my snail mail "spam" was not appreciated and I'm sure she wanted to rub it in.  However, she really did me a favor.  I'm sure most people that don't want my nice postcards probably just toss 'em in the garbage.  She has saved me printing, postage and other mailing costs.  I kind of wish that anyone that doesn't want my stuff would call and have me remove them from my list.

So I very nicely said, "I'll take care of it right away."  But even though she saved me money I was still a bit irate.  Snail mail simply isn't the same as spam e-mail.  Although I believe there is a list you can get on so you do not receive 3rd class mailings, my mailings are sent 1st class.

It does me no good to send to someone that has requested to be removed from my list.  But I guess I was miffed at the tone of her voice as she made it sound like I was doing something wrong or illegal.  Oh well, you can't please everyone.

That is kind of funny Judy.  I have to admit though that I have gotten 3 or 4 of those calls every year for the past 4 years.  The sad thing is that I pay close attention to where I have been mailing and every year 1 or 2 of those that have complained to be taken off the mailing list, then list their house for sale.  Usually I find out one way or the other how they picked the REALTOR they hired and as many times as not, it was the REALTOR who hit them with the most mail.

Judy, Too funny! I had somebody on our snail mail marketing list call us up demanding to be removed from our mailing list and wanted to know how we got the address to their home since it was in a Trust!

Paul, about half of the people who ask to be taken off my mailing list, want to know how I got their address, some are very put out that somebody can put a name with their address.  I just tell them that I work real hard and make sure I know who lives where.

I can't remember if this was a fsbo or an expired listing - must have been an expired listing because I would think fsbo's know they've put themselves out there.    I just found out that my friend used to walk a farm area (no mailing list) and a gentleman left her a message to stop leaving her promotional material but didn't give her his address.  She walked the farm again & he called her broker very upset.  His excuse was that he had to get out of his car to walk up to his door & take the stuff off.  Obviously, he didn't use his front door much!

We went with a hand delivery service for some brochures we got with our "Broker Agent of the Month" award.  I was a little apprehensive with this type of service but when we checked with the HOA policies on "no soliciation" rules we were told that it was okay because we weren't selling anything.  After about 2000 deliveries and no inquires, I figured it was a waste of time.  But then, my hair stylist told me she got one and she told me how nice it was and that she kept it! And, the other day I got an irrate email from somone telling me how rude it was to have dropped off a flyer and that if they were ever in the market to sell their home, we would be the last agent they would call. So, there you have it ~ just like you said.  Can't please everyone!
