Tough To Be A Renter
Posted Nov 29, 2007 @ 2:03 pm, Viewed by 222 Visitors, Read 224 Times.I often look on public sites and classifieds and read about people who have been given eviction notices, not much notice, nowhere to go, etc. I feel really bad for these people, so what is going on with our system? I would think with welfare this shouldn't be happening. Excuse my ignorance here though, maybe our welfare system isn't what it should be. I have always worked so I really wouldn't know.
The almighty dollar and the want for more of it causes too many unfortunate people to be left without a safe place to live. Property owners all over the city are raising rent to keep at par with the rest of the city, but chances are they purchased when the prices weren't that high so why do they need to over charge people? I know you can't do things for free as you won't ever get ahead, but I would think being reasonable and showing some charity would pay out more. I myself own property, and not to think I'm a saint, but I have fantastic renters therefore I don't want to lose them so I don't charge an arm and a leg for my place. I guess maybe I don't get the ‘revenue' property mentality and simply want my renters to pay my mortgage and taxes.
I'm not stupid though, there are probably a lot of people who give sob stories that aren't the best renters, but I am sure there are some of them who are truly good people but are thrown out because they can no longer come up with the rent.
Now, that being said, there are a lot of people out there who probably could be working and there doesn't seem to be a shortage of work out there, but everyone has a different circumstance so who are we to judge?
What are your thoughts? Should there be some rental control? Can the government buy more low incoming housing projects or build more to keep up with the growing demand? Is there a way we can sell all of these people some houses?
