Inyo County was established in 1866 from portions of the counties of Mono and Tulare. The name originated from the Indian word for mountain which means dwelling place of a great spirit.  Situated on the Sierra Nevada Mountains’ east side and Yosemite National Park’s south side, it is California’s second largest county with 10,227 square miles and an approximate population of 18,500.

The county seat is Independence, a rural community with an approximate population of 800.  It is the known as the heart of the Owens Valley.
