Saving Paper :: Two New Ideas

I'm always trying to save paper, cut down on paper work, and get rid of junk mail. One thing I learned today that never occurred to me before is that you can have the delivery of the yearly phone book stopped. Every year, I get the new one, recycle the old one, and put the new one in its place - in the closet in the back room. Never to be opened. Does anyone actually use the phone book anymore? I know I don't.
We are sometimes amused by the few, but regular requests, we get through our website of people asking for us to send them a "real estate book". Real Estate books haven't been around for a long long time. I'm not sure exactly how long but when I started in real estate about 10 years ago, everything was online. We always tell people that each and every Tampa Bay MLS listing is on our website, but sometimes it feels like they either don't believe us or we didn't tell them what they wanted to hear. We also have a certain segment of the population who wants us to mail them individual MLS listings. This is a more reasonable request and one that we find ourselves doing occasionally. While most people are comfortable online and receiving emails, certainly not everyone is.
Just last week we got a call from a real estate agent asking us to PRINT out each and every photo that we have of our Tarpon Springs Luxury Home listing. As it turns out, the gentlemen has been on our website looking at the photos and virtual tour but wants to really look over the photos from his easy chair. Now that's a new one for us! You can be sure my wife was printing away as soon as that call came in. (Sorry, sometimes you just can't save paper.)
I read in the paper today that Delta Air Lines has discontinued their use of paper ticket jackets and that most all other airlines will probably do so as well. This is another paper saving idea but I think it was more of a cost cutting venture on their part - but a good idea nonetheless. Those jackets serve no purpose as most people stick the paperwork in their briefcase or purse anyway and they quickly get discarded when they reach their destination.

Nice blog Bob and Donna! When I met Colleen she worked in a real estate office and one of her daily tasks was going through the 'real estate book' looking for listings. Certainly appreciate what technology has done for us.
I just got 2 more phone books. Hmm I don't think I need 10 per year delivered, but I do need 1. Great post. I try to do everyting online these days. It saves paper, and its convenient.

This is right up my alley. I always have to explain to buyers that I believe in saving paper and always print out the listings I carry around on the back of used paper. Many times it is my granddaugher's school work or "art." Of course, if I'm just meeting a new client I'll carry a small folder that hides the backs of my print-outs. I have to be careful that people don't think I'm not successful and/or just cheap, but I truly believe in saving trees. However, our family still uses phone books so I can't cancel that. We do recycle in our neighborhood so that's a good thing.
