My Journey to PR 5

I know for a lot of you, page rank is an old blog topic that has been beat to death by SEOs and developers all over but for me, page rank still baffles me.  Currently, my website is a PR3 and it is my short term goal to get it to PR5.  Obviously, I would like it to be a PR10, but it is my plan to document my journey to PR5 here on this blog in hopes that some of the community can benefit.

Getting started

Although I have some ideas on how to start off, I am want to see what type of comments get posted in terms of advice.  Now before you guys tee of on whether page rank really matters or not, I have to say that I have read plenty on both sides of the issue.  My take on it is that improving my PR isn't really going to hurt anything (best case scenario is that it helps).  In either case, the purpose of my blog is to provide some insight and help others that are in the same position as I am.

Here are the details on my site:

My site is located at www.nutshellrealty.com.  We are currently using an REW template that in my opinion is top notch as far as templates go.  The template takes all the basic SEO rules and practices into consideration.  The content is of fair quality and as good as I can get it without hiring a professional to write it or dedicating more time to it.

Keep checking back

So follow along with me on my journey to PR 5.  I will post every thing I do to help me accomplish this goal.  I intend to attain a PR5 without the purchase of any additional services.  If you are a real estate professional struggling with some of these SEO concepts, chime in.  If you are one of those ultra hip SEO types and want to strut your stuff by dropping some knowledge on some of us "commoners", feel free to show off here.

I managed to get up to PR5 on the last update, I can only say that following the same methods to improve SERP`s such as link building and adding fresh unique content got it there, all the industry standards really. However, I`d swap it for PR0 to rank number 1 for my keywords anytime. Good luck Lou.

According to some of the stuff I read, page rank is having less and less to do with postion for keywords.  In some cases, a drop in PR showed no dip in traffic.  At the very least, maybe we will find out more about why google even uses PR. Thanks for the comment.

Hi Lou, I have an interesting story about PR: because I was working on another project, my local blog was dormant for about a month and a half. Prior to that time it was a PR1, yet after a month or two it shot all the way up to PR4, without any work being put into it at all. So I think there is something to be said for letting it simmer (our blog has been up since October 2007), although I wouldn't recommend letting it sit for months at a time. Christopher, Zolve.com

Thanks for the contribution and I agree that age of the domain is definitely a factor but I am looking to demonstrate and active approach to gaining a better page rank. Thanks for the comment

Apologies, Lou, I misunderstood what you were looking for. Have you thought about building backlinks? We've done a bit of that and it seems to have helped our PR to some degree. (Indeed, I began building backlinks several weeks before I stopped working on the blog, so maybe that also had something to do with the PR increase.)

People will pay more to be on a site with very good or increasing traffic than a PR5 site with little traffic....   --- the prosecution rests its case your honor

Good luck, Lou!  Just be prepared for a long rest stop at PR4.  Pagerank is exponential, so getting to a 4 will be harder than getting to a 3, and getting to a 5 will be much harder than getting to a 4.  I just hit 5 after 1.5 years of work, and I'm looking at probably another year to get to a 6. Not trying to discourage you, just want you not to get discouraged!

With regards to age of domain, it doesn't play any factor whatsoever in PageRank (and obviously PR isn't the end all of serp positioning.)  We recently took a brand new page, on a 6 month old domain, and hit a PR6 in under 60 days.  It was a piece of diggbait, and it went ridiculously viral (actually is still going ridiculously viral.)

Thanks for the words of wisdom Eric.  I will keep plugging away and we will see what happens
