Marin County Rates A’s on Health & Education Report Card
Posted Jan 3, 2008 @ 4:26 pm, Viewed by 247 Visitors, Read 247 Times.A recent study evaluating the health of California families and children has given Marin County high scores. In the 2008 State of the State’s Children report, Marin ranked above other counties throughout the state in 27 out of 31 categories, including high scores across the board for meeting educational goals and state standards.
The study ranked Marin County as number 1 in the percentage of elementary school students that meet or exceed state standards in English and Math. The 2007 school year statistics show that 72% of Marin students scored at the Proficient or Advanced level in Math; and 68% were at Proficient or Advanced in Language Arts, as compared to the statewide averages of 52% and 43% respectively.
These scores aren’t surprising, as Marin County schools have long been recognized for excellence and are, indeed, part of what drives the Marin real estate market. Many of the schools in Marin have been named a California Distinguished School at least once. Most recently, Redwood High School and Hall Middle School, both located in Larkspur, received the award in 2007. Hall Middle School was designated as a Blue Ribbon School as well, which is the highest national honor an American school can receive.
Statistics for the health and well being of Marin children are equally impressive. Marin County families tend to have a higher level of employment and a higher per capita family income than the average Californian. Marin kids are statistically healthier and have better access to medical and dental care than their counterparts in the rest of the state.
Marin County did fall slightly behind in the study, however, with the percentage of children covered by dental insurance, the availability of childcare for infants and pre-school children, and the percentage of children who exercise regularly. Nevertheless, Marin kids were still deemed more physically fit with a lower rate of obesity than children in the rest of the state.
