Marin County School Featured In PBS Documentary

A hands-on approach to sustainability has earned students at the Marin Academy in San Rafael CA a role in a PBS documentary scheduled to air this fall. Filmmakers for the 26-minute special, Nourish: Food + Community, recently visited a number of schools, including Marin Academy High School, as it examines our relationship with food and the impact it has on our earth, ranging from a global perspective to grassroots efforts at conserving resources.

Marin Academy was chosen to participate in the film for several reasons.  Part of the biology curriculum is an organic garden that serves as an outdoor classroom.  Not only do students practice sustainable gardening with its environmental and social implications, but scientific experimentation is also part of the program.  Another notable eco-feature of Marin Academy is its school lunch program, which is distinguished by nutritious, organic, locally grown foods.

Many Marin County schools participate in environmental education programs designed to encourage leadership and sustainable behavior that students will carry into the community.  Curb Your Carbon educates children in global warming and encourages energy reduction at home.  Earth Matters teaches a sustainable earth and foods curriculum to 4th and 5th graders, and Next Generation Marin Green Schools Program engages students with assemblies, special events, and activities designed to empower youngsters’ efforts to live an environmentally responsible lifestyle.

The County of Marin has certified several Marin schools as Green Businesses for their implementation of sound environmental practices.  In addition to Marin Academy High School in San Rafael, two Fairfax schools, Manor Elementary School and Cascade Canyon School have received this distinction as well as Sir Francis Drake High School in San Anselmo and Corte Madera’s Marin Country Day School.
