Marin County Posts California's Lowest Unemployment Rate

Given the very public instability of our nations economy and the overall housing market, its sometimes difficult for the media to find something positive to report on, especially in California which is often labeled as 'ground zero' for the housing and foreclosure crisis.

Most recently, there has been a lot of coverage in the media about California's escalating unemployment rate which recently crossed the double-digit mark - 10.1% to be exact.  Obviously a very concerning number which has received extensive media attention at both the local and national level.

While these California jobless numbers are a serious concern which both directly and indirectly effect the economy, consumer confidence, and home prices, its critically important to remember that these statistics are aggregated at the state level and do not always accurately portray the realities of each town across the golden state.    A closer look at the jobless rates by county clearly shows that some counties are weathering the economic storm significantly better than others:

California County's with the Lowest Unemployment Rate

As a Marin Realtor, I was pleased to see that our county posted the lowest jobless rate in California.    While all towns across California are feeling the economic pinch to some degree, it was encouraging to see that Marin County is tracking well below the widely publicized 10.1% unemployment rate for the state of California.    This better than average trend for Marin County has been consistent throughout the years, and has been attributed to a variety of factors including the education level of the areas workforce, jobs in fields thought to be in more recession resistant  (i.e. healthcare, high tech, entertainment, finance), as well as the high number of self-employed business owners and entrepreneurs.  

While economists are predicting that things are likely to get worse before they get better, it's encouraging to see that Marin County and its residents are holding their own in these tough economic times.
