Dubai property is going green

In a move that some may consider long overdue, Dubai is becoming environmentally friendly, and in the real estate sector no less! Some recently announced freehold developments that have both commercial and residential use are planning to be as energy efficient as possible, by utilizing the most pollution reducing methods to power the projects.

At the moment, these environmentally friendly developments include Iris Bay and Lighthouse Tower, both part of the Business Bay development, Time Residence which will be located in the City of Arabia, and the Dubiotech and Empark complexes. I’m excited to see how the results turn out, given that Dubai is better known for grand-scale projects over ones that save energy. Some of the projects are focusing on exterior designs that keep the buildings cooler and save energy on air conditioning, while others are centered around natural power sources such as solar paneling at Time residence to make the building turn 360 degrees, or water and wind power at Lighthouse Tower.

This is a good first step by Dubai, where even recycling isn’t high on people’s lists and everyone drives everywhere, including myself. While it’s obviously too hot to walk anywhere most of the time, we should all try to contribute to reducing carbon footprints, especially businesses. There are no green laws in place and just the idea of energy-efficient buildings is a new concept; but I hope it is one that catches on.

While Dubai will always be recognized for unique projects like the Palm Jumeirah and the Burj Dubai, it would be great if future ventures of a similar magnitude could also make Dubai property more environmentally friendly.
