Buying a car in Dubai

Even though Dubai is quite a small city, the recent developments of infrastructure and freehold property have really stretched the city out along the coastline and further inland. The most convenient way to get around is by car, even though the traffic can be a nightmare at peak hours. With the metro system under construction, and hopefully operating in a couple of years, cars may become less popular in the future, but for now, owning a car if you live in Dubai is essential.
Low petrol prices
People moving to Dubai will immediately notice that petrol prices here are substantially low compared to everywhere else. As the United Arab Emirates is an oil- exporting country, this means that residents take advantage of the low costs of running a car, and hence everyone has a car, or two, or even more! While this isn’t very good for the environment, the weather in Dubai, especially in the summer, and the distance between places doesn’t allow for riding a bike or walking all the time.
Cars are also cheaper
Cars in the UK are very expensive, and coming to Dubai you will again notice that cars are also a whole lot less expensive. This probably contributes to the fact that most people drive a decent car here, simply because cars are cheaper to buy and cheaper to run. A car is sort of like a fashion statement in Dubai, and don’t be surprised if you see some ridiculously outrageous cars, or ridiculously expensive cars for that matter. Currently, the traffic problems mean that it isn’t necessary to drive around in a big, fast and expensive car, because at the end of the day, it won’t get you home quicker. The need for four-wheel drives has also decreased, as the road systems are excellent, and taking shortcuts through the sand is a thing of the past, unless you are going out into the desert.
Other car-related costs
While cars are cheaper to buy and cheaper to run, there are still registration and insurance costs to think about as well. These also tend to be cheaper than most western countries, but perhaps the most unexpected costs with buying a car are speeding tickets, which people pay out every year. There are radars all over the roads in Dubai, due to the fact that there are many speed-related accidents when the roads are clear. Since the number of speeding fines you can get isn’t under the same restrictions as other countries, drivers often end up paying out a fortune in fines every time they go to register their car, so be warned!
