The positives and negatives of life in Dubai

More and more people are moving to Dubai every day, and many more want to move to the Emirate or to the United Arab Emirates. There are some things that new residents or potential residents should know about living in Dubai, as there are positive and negative aspects just like every other city.
Tax-free salaries
This is the primary motivation for expatriates to move to the United Arab Emirates, as salaries are not taxed and you keep everything you earn. The salaries in the UAE for many residents are considerably higher than what they would earn back home, so this prompts residents to try to save as much as possible in order to buy property. They used to resort to buying property in their home countries, but with the freehold property boom in Dubai, residents are buying homes and apartments and Dubai real estate in general.
High standards of living
The standard of living here is also higher than most countries, and the high salaries that expatriates earn contribute to a luxury lifestyle of fast cars, hotel dining and spending time at the beach club on the weekend. While not every resident lives like this, quite a large number do, and the more average resident still gets to enjoy a better quality of life than they would in most other locations.
And now some of the negatives....
Bad traffic
This isn’t so much a huge negative, but an annoyance as traffic is persistent in all busy cities. The only difference is that Dubai doesn’t have quite a substantial public transport network yet. The metro system is currently being built, and should lead to a lot less traffic on the roads, but since cars are really the only way to get around, and it’s too hot to walk, the traffic problems will continue to annoy residents, and perhaps visitors, for a few more years.
High rents
This is the biggest problem with living in Dubai right now, and residents fear that this will continue for years to come. All the new residents and the rapid development in the Emirate have caused inflation in the economy, pushing prices up at quite a pace. While the costs of living are still below most western economies, a shortage of housing in the market has resulted in rental costs spiralling out of control. As a result, more and more residents, new and old, are buying properties to avoid having to pay out so much money in rent.
