The Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships 2008

And now for something a little different as my usual Blogs are typically related to the Dubai property market. The 2008 Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships got underway yesterday with the women's event starting first and again it seems like all the top stars are in town. The top seed in the women's is Justine Henin then following her in descending order are Svetlana Kuznetsova, Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic unfortunately Maria Sharopova had to pull out at the last minute after arriving in Dubai fresh from her victory in Doha last week due to a viral illness.I think most of the players really do enjoy coming to Dubai these days maybe its down to the near perfect weather conditions at this time of year and all the features this International City has to offer, there must be some reason as they keep returning!
The Dubai tennis field this year seems stronger than ever its almost as if there was a Grand Slam up for grabs and I for one am certainly looking forward to seeing some great matches over the course of the week.
In opening day matches, eighth seed Elena Dementieva saved two set points before beating Patty Schnyder 7-5 6-0, Dinara Safina overwhelmed Tunisia’s Selima Sfar 6-1 6-3, and Alona Bondarenko defeated Maria Kirilenko 3-6 6-3 6-2.
Her next opponent will be Alona Bondarenko, a recent Australian Open doubles champion with her sister Kateryna, who defeated Maria Kirilenko 3-6 6-3 6-2. In the only other main draw match, Dinara Safina took just over an hour to beat Tunisia’s Selima Sfar 6-1 6-3.
I will try and keep you updated over the next week and into the Dubai Men`s tennis tournament next week, do enjoy the tennis and the cooler weather!
