Douglasville's community spirit really shines through at this time of year and there are plenty of opportunities to contribute and get involved in local activities.

December 5th is the 50th Anniversary of the Villa Rica Gas Explosion, the Villa Rica Preservation Committee is trying to locate surviving family members of those who lost their lives that tragic day. The Committee will hold a memorial service at 10:30 AM in front of Berry's Pharmacy. Those Lost: Margaret Berry, Carolyn Davis, Bobby Roberts, O. T. Dyer, Johnny Dyer, Robert Broome, Oscar Hixon, Rozelle Johnson, Carl Vitner, Dr. Jack Burnham, Ann Smith, and Kenneth Hendrix.

Georgia's '100-Year Drought' has sparked controversy throughout the region and has already had an effect on area real estate transactions. I have personally been involved in two deals in rural West Ga involving homes being purchased that both used wells which had recently run dry. One of these homes did not have county water supplied yet, the now-dry well was the only source of water for the home. A competent home inspector discovered the situation and the switch-over to county water had to be worked into the transaction. Shallower wells are drying up throughout the region.

It's that time of the year again for the one-of-a-kind Douglasville 28th Annual Halloween Moonlight Run taking place on October 27th. Drawing some of the fastest runners from around the country, this special Douglasville 5K event has a unique Halloween twist in that it takes place after dark. Children age 12 and under can participate in the 1 mile Fun Run which kicks off at 8:30 PM, the 5K starts at 9:00PM. Sponsored by the Douglas County Rogue Runners, the race has been chosen as the Georgia State Championship 5K again this year, taking place on the usual certified course in the Historic Downtown Douglasville district.
