Another landmark restaurant in Honolulu closed its doors on December 9, 2011. My wife heard about the pending closure the day before and we had breakfast at Victoria Inn that Sunday. Coincidentally, it was the same day as the Honolulu Marathon. We didn't run in the marathon this year but we did think about all those runners as we ate our breakfast! On this last day of business, the place was packed.
There was little notice, just a couple of days beforehand the newspapers mentioned that Victoria Inn would close. No TV coverage as far as I could tell.
Victoria Inn has been around for a LONG time. I remember attending my cousin's wedding reception in one of the ballrooms upstairs around 1978. Walking into the restaurant in 2011, it looked like the last time it was remodeled was about the time my cousin's reception took place. Still, it was quaint with a loyal base of customers.
The menu was what you would expect of a local restaurant in
Honolulu - American style and local foods like a Hawaiian plate,
oxtail soup and Japanese dishes.
Besides the restaurant and ballrooms, the lounge was popular with people coming in to watch sports in the evenings. Someone told me there was also a bowling alley upstairs at one time.
Victoria Inn was
located on 12th Avenue in Kaimuki. We'll miss Victoria Inn and will do our part
to keep other great restaurants in Honolulu open!
