The Police completed their world tour in Honolulu this past weekend. Initially they we had one show scheduled for Saturday, February 16th. Tickets sold out in about two hours.
The Police decided to have another show on Sunday, February 17th. I managed to get tickets for that show, held at the Blaisdell Arena in downtown Honolulu.
The opening act was a group called Fiction Plane. They sounded pretty good, I'd never heard of them though so the songs were not familiar. If I were in my 20's again I'd probably have all their albums. We later learned that the lead singer, Joe Sumner is also Sting's son. Fiction Plane finished their set and we waited for The Police.
After about half an hour the lights darkened. People started cheering and going wild. The Police have been around since the 1970's and many of the fans are not young kids, but they were acting like it! Running through the aisles strumming their air guitars and dancing around. It was pretty fun (and funny) to watch.
The Police opened up with my personal favorite, Message in a bottle. They sang the crowd favorites and we cheered non-stop.
Our seats gave us a profile view of the band from their right side. Not the favorite angle, we were pretty close though. Large video screens above them gave us plenty to look at, with close ups of the group and then a view below of all three and the audience.
What I enjoyed about The Police concert
Besides simply hearing the group live for the first time, I really liked watching Stewart Copeland. We saw him from above and when the video screen focused in on him we could see how hard he was working on the drums. On several songs (King of Pain, for example) he had an elaborate set of chimes and the crowd really enjoyed watching him. On other songs we could see his concentration and he seemed to be staring off into space as he focused on the music and his timing.

Encore performance
They came back and sang several songs - not just one or two. Then Stewart Copeland and Sting went off stage and we figured that was it. But Andy Summers was still on the stage, waving towards the other members.
After a minute or two, Sting, Stewart Copeland and the Fiction Plane crew all came out together. They sang another great song, All I want is to be next to you. Stewart Copeland played a guitar instead of drums. Sting and his son sang together. It was a cool moment.
I think our local newspaper said The Police will start a new tour this May. I tried to locate the article again and didn't see it. Keep your eyes open and maybe you can catch them in your town. It was a great concert and if you're a Police fan you won't want to miss it.
