P90X - Is this the way to get fit?

P90X and how to get a great body

Have you seen the P90X commercials?  They're the type that come on late at night or on obscure cable channels.  The commercial shows people with Before and After pictures.  What a difference!  The Before photos show flabby or average guys and girls.  Some of them have a bit of muscle.  The After pictures show these people lean and mean with six pack abs.  You can easily tell that the same person is used in the Before and After photos.  The commercials also show live video of the people.

We see commercials that seem to good to be true all the time.  This one looked like the real deal to me.

I ordered P90X

I've been fairly active in my adult life, having competed in numerous races including 11 Ironman Triathlons.  Never an elite athlete, I'm more of a middle-of-the-pack kind of guy.  Occasionally I've placed in the top 3 in some smaller races.

These days I'm working hard at selling houses and also fixing up my own house in Honolulu.  At age 46, it's getting really hard to avoid gaining weight.  For people in your 20's and 30's, you think you got it tough?  Every year it gets harder to keep in shape.  Get used to it.  Adapt or be flabby, it's your decision.

I watched the TV commercials and visited the P90X website.  The kit costs about $150.  Besides that, you need:

  • A TV and DVD player.
  • An area to work out - about 16 square feet will do.  This can be in your home or outdoors.
  • A pullup bar, one or two sets of dumbells and an exercise mat.
  • About an hour a day to exercise.

The cost is very reasonable compared to other exercise options and weight loss plans. Once you buy the equipment they can be used over and over again, no monthly fees.  Most of the exercise equipment can be bought second hand at places like Goodwill if you're really strapped for cash.

Don't say you don't have time!  If you watch TV for an hour or more a day YOU HAVE THE TIME.  I had the time - that's why I saw the commercials on TV!  It's a matter of switching priorities.  Some of those shows on TV are so mindless anyways - especially the reality shows.  Create your own reality!   Make a set of biceps and a six pack on that body.

Starting up with P90X

The set includes workbooks and 12 DVD's.  The main book explains the training schedule.  In a nutshell, we use the first seven DVD's (Sunday through Saturday) for the first three weeks.  My girlfriend and I started off the first week just great.  After work, we'd start up the player and do our workout.

Each DVD has a specific focus.  For example, DVD 1 is for the chest and back.   Get ready for pushups and pullups.  DVD 2 is Plyometrics.  This concentrates on jumping exercises and moves you'd see football or basketball players practicing.  DVD 3 is for shoulders and arms.  This will involve curls, flys and other weightlifting exercises.  DVD 4 is a yoga workout.  Have you ever thought yoga is for pansies?  Try it out!  If you've never done yoga before, get ready to be surprised.  This will help your balance and strength.  If you're a tough guy that never stretches you'll learn what flexibility can do.

One thing that surprised me is that out of the first seven DVD's, we have a yoga workout and a stretching workout.  This is not all about pumping iron.  Tony Horton knows what he's doing.

After the first week my girlfriend got sick (not because of P90X) and we were busy with house renovations.  The girlfriend is okay now and we're able to continue.

I feel good already!  After just 10 days of workouts I can feel the muscles in my arms and back developing.  I'll update this blog to let you know how it goes.

Time to be humble

Somebody asked why I didn't post a picture, so here ya go, feast your eyes!  You can see where I need P90X the most - in Hawaii we call it the Opu (belly).  I'm into the third week of P90X.  There have been some missed days, we continue on the path though.  For the record, this photo was taken on March 26th, 2008.

P90X will burn away that gut!

Yes I used to be skinnier, but weren't we all skinny at one time?  Next time you see these abs they'll be ripped!  Even if I have to use photoshop to get them!
