This restaurant has been around since 1961 and it's a favorite in Honolulu. Rainbow Drive In serves "local kine" food, such as boneless chicken with gravy, beef stew, chili hot dog, hamburgers and french fries.
My favorite meal at Rainbow Drive In is breakfast. After a morning of running, swimming or surfing, this is a great place to stop by and get some pancakes and eggs, french toast, corned beef hash or fried rice. This restaurant also has reasonable prices. Expect to pay about $5 for breakfast, maybe more if you order coffee or a soda.
Note: this is not health food! Order pancakes or french toast and you will be amazed at the slab of butter they put on your plate. But oh, it does taste good to melt that butter and eat your pancakes. The plate lunches are pretty fattening and have generous portions (two large scoops) of rice. Eat this food in moderation.
Rainbow Drive In is located at 3308 Kanaina Avenue in Kapahulu. The location is an intersection of three streets: Kapahulu Avenue; Kanaina Avenue and Castle Street. The easiest way to get to Rainbow Drive In is via Kapahulu Avenue. Rainbow Drive In is located on a corner on the Diamond Head side (that's east) of Kapahulu Avenue, near the Ala Wai Golf Course.

Over the years we've seen many places come and go in Honolulu, such as Alex Drive In, KC Drive In, Coco's and many others. Rainbow Drive In is a survivor with cool neon lights and a local atmosphere. They sell Rainbow Drive In t-shirts, hats and bumper stickers too. Pick one up and support small business in Honolulu!
