Honolulu Police Department gets tough on speeding

Honolulu police cars

Some Hawaii Police use personal cars with small lights on top.  Speeders often don't realize it's a cop until he turns on the sirens and lights to pull them over!

Hawaii has relatively low speed limits, the highest limit in the State is 65 mph.  Most of Oahu's highways are subject to heavy traffic and have limits of 50-55 mph.

When the road opens up, it's hard to obey the speed limit.  If you stick with 55 mph, everybody will be passing you.  The main thing is to "go with the flow" and not be whizzing past all the other vehicles, an easy way to be spotted by the police.

A couple of weeks ago a 19-year old man was driving his car at the H-1 / H-2 merge and changing lanes quickly.  He clipped another car, which rolled over and its driver, a 54-year old man, died at the scene.  This is cause for more diligence in catching speeders for HPD.

Another rumour I've heard several times is that the department has stepped up writing tickets to help fund its budget.  I haven't read it in the paper but a few different people have told me that's what's happening.

Watch out for pedestrians too!

Hawaii recently enacted a law similar to California's, where a driver must come to a stop and let pedestrians pass if they are on the drivers HALF of the street.  If a driver is in a middle lane (for example the third lane of a five lane one-way street), he must wait until the pedestrian has exited street.

We have had many pedestrian fatalities, some due to impatient pedestrians and most probably due to impatient drivers.  It would be terrible to live the rest of your life knowing you killed a pedestrian because you were in a hurry to get to the store or the beach.  Please be careful.

Aloha, Mike
