Honolulu surf shop - RV's Ocean

I first heard about RV's Surf Shop from my brother.  He told me how he had some dings on his surfboard repaired and the price was very reasonable.  At that time I was mainly surfing Canoes (a surf break) in Waikiki.  It's a crowded surf spot with a mix of beginners and experienced regulars - the kind of place where boards get dinged.  I decided to have my dings repaired at RV's.

RV's Surf Shop in Honolulu

I took my board to RV's and an employee carefully noted every ding that could potentially let water in.  About a week later, I went back to pick it up.  The owner, Roy Vierra was at the shop and he gave me a friendly greeting.  Roy described the repairs to the board, then talked story for awhile about the funny dings he's seen on surfboards.  Owners sometimes make up weird excuses because they prefer not to admit that they simply dropped the board or bumped into a rock.  Roy can usually tell how a board got dinged by looking at it.

Roy is from Lanikai, on the windward side of Oahu.  He grew up surfing.  Now he shares his water skills and knowledge with his customers.  Roy's motto is "Get in the Water!"

The RV's name

The shop's name is derived from Roy's initials.  Roy Vierra = RV.    The shop has a website written in both English and Japanese - RV's Ocean Sport

The Surfboards

RV's has a great selection of new and used boards.  Being fairly new to surfing, I periodically switch to shorter and better boards.  One day I stopped by the shop and talked with one of Roy's salesmen, Mike.  He was very knowledgeable and sold me an 8'6" Town and Country thruster board.  I bought it, took it surfing and loved it.  The board is long and stable, yet turns pretty well.  It also catches small waves on those days where there's not much surf.

I'm looking at some of RV's new boards and might be picking up another one in the coming months.  A nice thing about surfboards is that they're less expensive than say, a new high performance bicycle or golf clubs.  Many surfers own several surfboards and they decide which board to use based on the waves on a given day.

Surf Lessons

Roy also gives surf lessons!  Want to get up on a board quickly and have fun?  Call Roy and take a lesson.  It's worth it, especially for visitors staying on our island for a short time.

Getting to RV's Surf Shop

RV's is located at 3348 Campbell Avenue in Kapahulu.  Campell is a side street that branches off from Kapahulu Avenue.  If you're driving on Kapahulu Avenue and see Zippy's Restaurant, turn at that intersection to get onto Campbell Avenue.

RV's phone number is (808) 732-7137.  Shop hours are 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily.   Besides surfboards, RV's sells accessories such as surf leashes, surf wax plus nose and tail guards.  RV's also offers surfboard storage with rates as low as $10 per month.

Aloha, Mike

I just had my ding repaired at RV's and I'm very pleased with their work  Cost was also very reasonable, too.  Only problem is the parking but regardless, RV is definitely my favorite local surf shop now.  Too bad I didn't get to meet Roy yet but I sure will someday...when I get my new board - hopefully next year.
