Hawaii Kai homes

Hawaii Kai is a sparkling gem on the east side of Oahu.  Hawaii Kai has seen significant growth in the last few years with new homes and townhomes coming into Hawaii's real estate market.  The median year that homes in Hawaii Kai were built was 1976.  Overall, this neighborhood has younger homes compared to most of Honolulu's neighborhoods.

For those looking to build a new home, Hawaii Kai is one the neighborhoods in Honolulu where there's still vacant land available for development.

Hawaii Kai features homes with docks suitable for parking boats.

Boat owners can access Maunalua Bay and the Pacific Ocean, then return to their back doors via canals like this one.  Another great feature of Hawaii Kai.

History of Hawaii Kai

Hawaii Kai was originally known as Kuapa Pond.  In the 1950's, this area was accessible via a narrow two lane road and considered to be "too far" from downtown Honolulu.  In addition, the area was generally swampy and difficult to build upon.  Most developers focused Waialae and Kahala, neighborhoods closer to town with dry soil.  Along came Henry J. Kaiser, a successful business man ready for a new challenge.

Henry Kaiser was a person interested in helping the public.  He saw a need for housing, noting that many families had two or three generations living together in the same house.

Mr. Kaiser negotiated a development contract to build on 6,000 acres land at Kuapa Pond.  He created canals to drain the land and provide suitable areas for homes and townhomes to be built.

The Hawaii Kai name

Henry Kaiser chose the name of the neighborhood. In the Hawaiian language, "Kai" means ocean.  The "Hawaii Kai" name gives the impression of a Hawaii neighborhood along the sea.  "Kai" also corresponds with the first three letters of Mr. Kaiser's last name, providing us a reminder of the great things he did for Hawaii.
