Diamond Head Surf Is Back

Surfing Diamond Head on Memorial Day weekend 2009

Summer is (nearly) here and the waves are rolling in at Diamond Head again!  For those who are not familiar with the waves in Hawaii, in the summer we tend to get waves on the south side of the island (Honolulu) and in the winter we tend to get waves on the north side (the famous North Shore).

South Shore waves typically do not get as big as the North Shore.  It still gets big enough to be plenty fun and scary too.  When wave sizes are overhead, that's all I need for my thrills.

Waves are measured in two ways.  The old way, also known as "Hawaiian Style" measures the wave from its back.  The more common way to measure waves these days is by the face.  Typically, the face of the wave is twice as big as the back.  So a two-to-four foot day (Hawaiian…

Honolulu Surf Shop - RV's Ocean

photo mikey

I first heard about RV's Surf Shop from my brother.  He told me how he had some dings on his surfboard repaired and the price was very reasonable.  At that time I was mainly surfing Canoes (a surf break) in Waikiki.  It's a crowded surf spot with a mix of beginners and experienced regulars - the kind of place where boards get dinged.  I decided to have my dings repaired at RV's.

I took my board to RV's and an employee carefully noted every ding that could potentially let water in.  About a week later, I went back to pick it up.  The owner, Roy Vierra was at the shop and he gave me a friendly greeting.  Roy described the repairs to the board, then talked story for awhile about the funny dings he's seen on surfboards.  Owners sometimes make up weird… Read Full Post

Hawaii triathlon shop celebrates its first year in business

Momentum Multisport in Honolulu

Momentum celebrated its first year in business during the month of August, 2008.  Despite slow economic times, Momentum has succeeded in bringing quality triathlon products to Hawaii at affordable prices.  Knowledgeable sales staff and bike mechanics make this a great store to shop.

The shop recently had a barbecue as part of its anniversary celebration.  Shop employees, customers and athletes stopped by for some good food, talking story and watching the Olympics on the big screen tv.  Buddy, the shop's black-lab mix mascot was available for petting too.

Michael Bisig "Biz", first person to the left in the staff photo above, recently departed from Momentum with his girlfriend Maribel.  They…

P90X - Is This The Way To Get Fit?

P90X and how to get a great body

Have you seen the P90X commercials?  They're the type that come on late at night or on obscure cable channels.  The commercial shows people with Before and After pictures.  What a difference!  The Before photos show flabby or average guys and girls.  Some of them have a bit of muscle.  The After pictures show these people lean and mean with six pack abs.  You can easily tell that the same person is used in the Before and After photos.  The commercials also show live video of the people.

We see commercials that seem to good to be true all the time.  This one looked like the real deal to me.

I ordered P90X

I've been fairly active in my adult life, having competed in numerous races including 11 Ironman Triathlons.  Never…
