Landmarks in the area include the Kahala Hotel & Resort, Kahala Mall and of course Diamond Head. Other businesses such as doctors, dentists, grocery stores make it possible for Kahala residents to get most of their shopping and errands done right in their own neighborhood.
Drive down Kahala Avenue on a sunny day and enjoy the beauty of Hawaii. Blue skies, colorful flowers and the ocean are captivating. Kilauea Avenue and Hunakai Street are the other main surface streets in Kahala. The H-1 freeway travels through Kahala and terminates at the Kahala Mall, becoming Kalanianaole Highway which leads to Hawaii Kai.
Kahala is a popular place for people from all parts of the world. Buyers from the U.S. mainland, Asia and Europe all enjoy the neighborhood because of the sandy beaches, surf spots, proximity to the Waialae Country Club and Kahala Mall.
Kahala's original homes
When the area was initially developed in the 1950's and 1960's, Bishop Estate sold properties in leasehold. Lease agreements had rigid specifications, requiring 25-foot setbacks from the street, 12-foot setbacks along the sides and allowing for single-story homes. Kahala had a uniform, uncluttered feeling which many enjoyed.
Over time, lessees were offered the chance to buy fee simple interests in their properties. Properties gradually converted to fee simple and lease requirements no longer applied. Owners were free to make changes and comply with the zoning requirements of the City and County of Honolulu, which allowed for two story homes and smaller setbacks.
Some owners have torn down their old homes and replaced them with tasteful modern homes. On the other hand, older style homes seem to be resurging in popularity for those who enjoy the Kahala area and think that 2,000 - 3,000 square feet of living area is enough.
Origin of the Kahala name
The name "Kahala" refers to the Hala tree, aka the Pandanus tree. The Hala tree has strong leaves that can be woven to make floor mats, baskets and pillows.
A native fish also has the "Kahala" name, it's sometimes referred to as the Amberjack.
