Has the long, cold winter left you staring at the tired, boring walls of your Lexington KY home? Well, one of the easiest and most economical ways to transform a room is with a coat of paint.

So what's "in style" in the world of color this year? Here’s a nostalgic hint: tried-and-true aqua blues and butter yellows are big this year, along with opulent jewel tones and spring greens. According to trend-trackers at Home Depot, the following trends are sweeping the country this year:

Rich & Sophisticated

This trend is defined by colors that are rich and oplulent like bold reds (Glidden’s Drum Beat), glamorous golds (Behr’s Ripe Wheat) and dramatic dark hues such as velvet green and even black (Ralph Lauren’s Bone Black). This palette works well in very traditional decor but is also a surprising way to add warmth and richness to an otherwise minimalist decorating scheme.

Nature Calls

The last few years have seen a strong trend towards bringing the outdoors in and the trend will continue in 2009. The twist this season is that these nature-inspired colors have taken on greater intensity – from earthy browns (Behr’s Bear Rug) to the old-is-new-again shades of green, ranging from from classic, deep moss green (Behr’s Jungle Green) to fresh, spring green (Glidden’s Prairie Grass). This deep, warm palette works well with both Asian-inspired decor schemes and contemporary settings.

Gray Matters

More than ever, home decor trends are trailing runway fashions and grays, in shades ranging from charcoal to gunmetal to silver, have been big with designers from New York, Milan to Paris. This year, walls will sport everything from gray flannel (Ralph Lauren’s Palais Royale) to storm cloud gray (Ralph Lauren’s Pale Gray). Accented with white for a classic interpretation or a dash of blue (Behr’s Tropical Tide) or green (Glidden’s Fresh Lime) for modern surroundings, gray can work with any home's decor style.

Old World, New Style

This old-world palette, which seems to never go out of style, has once again become popular. Inspired by old architecture, these aged and muted colors were patterned after the hues of limestone buildings, aged copper gutters and tones that resemble rich mahogany. If you like a home steeped in traditional luxury, this palette will fit wrap you up in it's rich, classic colors.
