Do follow and no follow on an REW Blog post

I am just going through the motions and making an REW Blog post with all features used so that I can make some final decisions on dofollow vs nofollow links within posted content.

So far herer is my list:

No follow:

  • Any links posted in the body content area of the post itself.
  • Any comments posted by non logged in users linking to outside sites.
  • Links to pages like printable page, contact me, rss feed that sort of thing (you don't want those spidered)

Do Follow:

  • Signature links (max 3, just like the forums)
  • Related links: I am going to reduce this to two links and the links posted "must" be relevant to the topic posted (such as a source of research etc)
  • Links to authors social profiles (linkedin, facebook, twitter) << These are automatic and not added each time you post, just make sure the user has added them in the /members/ section.
  • Blogroll - you MUST be able to vouch for the links here, but if you can and they are legit, you can add up to 5 in your blogroll (This is blogwide) so you should make sure they are your best sites, or your best friends.

Enjoy this post? Why not share with friends or add a comment of your own?

Hi Morgan,

Why are you online at this hour? Shouldn't you be outdoors enjoying this fabulous summer? BTW try posting a video in a blog. Maybe you can help me with the correct technique. Had no problems in the previous blog but have drawn blanks with using the same technique is this format.

I think the realted links and 5 blogroll links should make everyone happy and all your older members like JudyO will much better understand after those are made dofollow. I guess I'lll be trying to clean up my blogroll as soon as possible. Give us an update when these changes become active and I'm sure the static will die down significantly.

judyo

Hey Cal, what do you mean by "older" members - I resemble that comment! ;)

Thanks for the clarification Morgan and I guess that's fair, although I'd rather have blog links in the body of the post be followed rather than blog signature links. I'd rather give up the sig links (blogs only), and be allowed up to 3 content post links as they should be more contextual and more apt to be clicked on by readers since they are part of the story in the post. In fact, I try not to create too many anchor text links in a blog post as one should be sufficient to get the story across (besides a Contact Me or Auto. Home Finder link, which should be nofollow). Would you consider doing it that way?

I've never used (that I can remember, but keep in mind, I'm an older member), the Related Links section because I was never sure how to use them properly and I put relevant links in the body of the post.

I also like the idea of up to 5 blogroll links being followed. This answers a lot of my questions.

Judy, unfortunately (or fortunately) you are not the problem. The problem is those folks without any SEO knowledge, or worse yet a complete lack of respect for search engine guidelines - we simply cannot vouch for links posted in content (nor do we have the resources to audit every single post) - Links as "related" are just as valid from an anchor text / PR perspective to those embedded in content, you should suffer no issue there. And this way you can put links in your article for "valid reasons" and those have nothing to do with link pop, and everything to do with benefitting your visitors and driving traffic.

Imagine no longer having to worry or ask yourself "does this post have to many links in it? Am I going to get in trouble?

In your articles you can now link where you think it will benefit the reader, without a second thought.

Morgan Carey

And btw Judy, if every user was you (someone we trust to do the right thing) we would not have any nofollows at all :)

thataway61

Are you going to add the 2 "related links" fields to the "pages"? Just trying to form a strategy about a project I'm pondering. Will be good when we see how the quick searches and snippets can be added as well. Is that coming soon?

Spoken Gently

I think these are good steps. Curious how we go about vouching for the blog roll links. I have 12 right now, but half point to content within the realestatewebmasters domain, so I'll need to pick and choose.

I'm with Judy on the related links (or even sig links) being within the body of the blog article. However, I understand monitoring this would be more difficult than 2 related links. Perhaps this could be solved through the volunteer moderators idea.

Tim Shepard Destin

Thanks for the clarification. A few questions though:

1. If we didn't use related links in old posts, should we go back and add them now?

2. If I change my signature links, does that change all signatures (past, present, and future) or just present and future?

Spoken Gently

Morgan, Have you decided when and how the blogroll links will be enabled? Also, it would be nice to have the option of a text-box. This way we can add our Facebook widget. Just a thought.

veterok

Hi Morgan. How can I make my signature link dofolow?

Morgan Carey

I am quite sure if it's your first couple of blog posts everything is nofollow until you have posted x amount of blogs that can be reviewed. It's not many, just a couple - keeps the spammers from getting anywhere link wise.

I don't recommend posting low quality quick posts trying to get there though, as you would be flagged. As for your one post - I do personally think there is too many links in one article to one website - but that would be a mods call. (All links in body content are nofollow anyways, so you are wasting your time link spamming like that).

Flasch186

Hey Morg, is there someone we can appeal to so as to get off the no follow list. Im busting my hump trying to grow this co. and any help I can get is appreciated. {shrug} Thought it'd be worth asking anyways. Im certainly not a spammer but just want natural link to follow. Thanks for hearing my pseudo whine :)

Morgan Carey

Flasch - I cannot manually remove them. They are in place until you hit x amount of blog posts (the number really isn't that high, less than 10) and it is retroactive, so your related links, blog roll, and signatures will become do follow once you cross x threshold.

Good luck

How long before the search function is available on the "pages"?

Morgan Carey

Which search function are you talking about Cal?

thataway61

The REWSite pages with the search function in the sidebar as seen in the recent mockup. Waiting on that plus finding out how to display listings within those pages as mentioned in one of your prior posts. I didn't want to start creating pages until I knew all of the inteneded new functionality of the REWSite pages would be and how to use that functionality. After that do a little testing to see how to use it best.

Hi Morgan... I noticed the signature links are do followed but the blog rolls are not at this time. Is there something I need to do to change that?

Morgan Carey

Only the first 3 will be dofollowed in the blogroll anyways, but I see it's not working on mine either, I will make adjustments when we launch the new skin.

Wayne Long

Oh I thought you said 5 .... When is the new skin being launched?

Morgan Carey

Check out my blog as we speak Wayne :) - I now have a BG image, center image, and a quick search enabled. I don't have any listings, but you can see some at http://www.realestatewebmasters.com/blogs/buddy-blake/

Morgan Carey

You're right btw, I did say five (just re-read above) - I'll get that addressed ASAP - btw the friends thing is now back so be sure to add all your favorite bloggers and they will be prompted to add you as well (helps internal SEO for all involved)

Wayne Long

Thanks Morgan.... The forum and blogs look great!!

Wayne Long

I noticed your blog has has a different look than mine ... Are there settings where we can change the look? I looked for them but did not find them right away.

Also, is there a way to set up our blog so that listings can be pulled in automatically from the mls to our blog?

Spoken Gently

Hi Morgan,

With the latest REW blog update, the 2 related links are now nofollow. They were dofollow as menioned in your post until the latest blog update. Also, are the 5 blogroll links going to be dofollow or nofollow?

Spoken Gently

Also, is there a blog entry or forum post somewhere that outlines the latest changes? I like the search and the background image for example.

Morgan Carey

We are working on tutorials for all the new features - they will be available soon.

Morgan Carey

Wayne, yes your listings can be automatically imported "if" your board is on the list of REW IDX boards that have been mapped. Who's your MLS?

Wayne Long

Morgan mine is the CBOR... Actually I am also on LCAR ...... you have both mapped of course for my LECs .. Not sure if you can pull 2 boards. If you have to choose one please pull the CBOR

Morgan Carey

Actually Wayne, it is not the boards that we have mapped (for older sites) it's only the boards for 3.0 IDX - not sure if either is on the list yet - that list is here: http://www.rewidx.com/mls-boards/

Wayne Long

Nope - our board is not on that list. I was hoping you could bring them in from our feed going to the LECs ???? Either way the blog looks great - just not sure how many listings will get loaded if we can't pull them automatically.

Wayne Long

Hey Morgan ... Any word on making the blog roll links do followed?

Morgan Carey

They are dofollowed already - :)

Wayne Long

Yep... My bad.... I could have sworn I looked earlier and saw no-follows. Thanks!!
