The Real Estate Ride
Posted May 20, 2008 @ 1:40 pm, Viewed by 427 Visitors, Read 440 Times.Just one more year. That’s what I said last year about buying a new car. My car is up there in age, but it still looks great inside and out and runs well. Right now with the gas prices escalating, I think everybody is starting to FINALLY pay attention to the need to transform cars. When I research cars however, it seems there really isn’t the perfect car out there for me.
I need:
· Four wheel drive or AWD, I am a rural broker in Douglas County, Oregon and climb up and down lots of interesting steep hills and gravel roads with clients. It comes in handy for snow days too.
· I need a people mover that is comfortable for all sizes.
· Something that looks professional with lots of room for people and the sales stuff I have to schlep around such as Open House signs.
· Something that is gets good gas mileage.
I want:
· An SUV. I am fairly short and I like to sit up high.
· I want leather seats, never had a car with leather seats.
· I want to have a vehicle that just makes me happy I own it.
· Someday I’ll own a Corvette (don’t knock it, one friend reports his gets 30mpg on the hwy!)
If I was a totally practical person, I suppose my list would stop at the needs section, but as silly as it sounds there is an emotional level to my reasoning for cars too. I think guys are actually worse about the emotional side of car buying than women are. Just look at all the car shows on TV.
As for a professional looking car, I am not one inclined to have my car windows painted with advertisement. I don’t think it is a professional look and besides I prefer to be anonymous in traffic. One of my agent friends swears she has had many responses from her car signs, but it’s just not my style.
Some of the cars that I come back to are: the Buick Enclave, the Maxda CX9, the Ford Edge, the Lincoln MKX, (these three aforementioned are all cousins) The Hyundai Sonata or Veracruz, the Toyota 4 Runner or Rav4.
For awhile I was absolutely jazzed about the Chevy Trailblazer SS. I have always wanted a Corvette. Just imagine, a work SUV with a ‘vette engine in it! I mentioned this to an agent friend in the office and he just scowled at me. He’s a super greenie. But hey, I can dream can’t I?
The old sales adage goes that your car should show how successful you are. In this day and age, political correctness has crept into it as well. So instead of trying to please everybody, I am just going for what suits me and won’t break the bank at the gas pump. I think almost anything we buy in the next three years that isn’t already a hybrid will have little resale value, because more and more hybrids or green vehicles are coming.
I am proud of American ingenuity. For those of us who need the bigger more powerful vehicles, changes are already occurring. Hopefully, our old ‘89 Chevy 4x4 will be replaced someday soon with a fuel efficient truck that can pull a horse trailer just as powerfully. I like the biodiesel alternative at this point in time and I hear rumors that a new biodiesel station is in the works for Roseburg.
Currently, I am all over the place in my thinking. Nothing so far has knocked me out as a “must have” car. Chrysler is coming out with a hybrid Aspen and Mercedes is also coming out with a new crossover. Crossovers all look alike to me. Why pay for a luxury crossover when many mid range crossovers look just like them? It just gets so frustrating.
Speaking of pinching pennies, gas prices are really changing the way agents are doing business. The increase in costs makes one have more resolve to getting buyers qualified and committed before jumping up and running all over town showing houses willy nilly.
For now, I am going for yet another year with my car and keeping an eye out for just that right ride.
