The Power of Trackbacks

So I've been studying the techniques being used by the current contest leader, Eric Blackwell, in the Greatest Real Estate Agent in the World contest, and one thing that particularly stands out is the number of trackbacks that have been posted to his blog entry. At last count there are 19 trackbacks, which means that there are 19 other blogs that have linked to his article and submitted a request for a trackback.

Now what the trackback appears to do is to create a reciprocal link between the originating blog, and the receiving blog. This helps establish a relationship between these two isolated pieces of content. However, the originating blog is typically giving an unfiltered link which has more link juice(TM), while the receiving blog typically reciprocates with a nofollow link which gives less link juice(TM). The net effect of this is to strengthen a link island, which is a network of related content that is interlinked, with an emphasis on the receiving blog's content.

Thus, in this case, all these trackbacks help to create a network of related content between Eric's friends, which helps establish authority, and with most of the link juice going to Eric's site, and yes I'm jealous that I don't have so many Realtor friends with powerful well established blogs who want to give me their link juice, at least not yet!
