Patio Home Confusion

What exactly is a patio home?  According to this article at About.com:

Patio homes in Arizona were traditionally 1-story homes that shared at least one side wall and had a back patio but not necessarily a backyard.

Patio homes are usually built with 2, 3 or 4 homes in each building instead of the continuous row of homes common with townhouses.
The Houston real estate market has it's fair share of patio homes, and during the initial stages of our buyer consultations, we ask if this is a criteria for our client's next home.  More times than not, our client really isn't certain to the true definition of a patio home.

In the future, remember that any home built with a common wall and sharing a common area is most likely a patio home.  You may also be able to look at the legal description of the property and get a look at the subdivision description.  In various neighborhoods, you will see the neighborhood described as "Huntwood Patio Homes" or "Huntwood PH".

To see the legal description of a property, you can look at the public tax records for your particular county, and then referencing the property address.  Most counties now have tax records available to be accessed online.

Steve, great info: Do you happen to have the website for public records in Houston by chance? Would make a great supporting link for users reading this article

I learned about patio homes in Gilroy, AZ, as one of our friends owns one. We don't have such a style in the Chicago area (closest thing would be duplexes). I was thinking of buying one in AZ as an investment and a possible retirement place vs. a condo or townhouse. I thought it was an Arizona thing.

We have "Patio homes" and zero lot line homes here in Memphis. here, most patio homes have the garage in the rear via a common drive in the back of the homes and a zero lot line home is not attached to another home as a patio home usually is (although very, very close to one another). here a big trend is the upscale zero lot line home. Low upkeep but with all the amenities that the empty nester's and busy professionals want.
