REW Charity Proposal: The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada
You’ve likely heard about Multiple Sclerosis (MS) before; you may even know someone with MS, but do you know what causes Canada’s most common neurological disease? The truth is, we do not know what causes MS.
May is MS Awareness Month, and I can’t think of a better time for Real Estate Webmasters to show its community support (through its AMAZING charity initiative) for this important cause. This is my formal submission to REW to choose our local chapter of the MS Society, Central Vancouver Island, for its May charity contribution of $3,000.
What is Multiple Scleroris?
Multiple Sclerosis is an unpredictable, complex disease that affects 100,000 Canadians. MS is most commonly diagnosed in young adults aged 15 to 40, but there have been cases of some children being diagnosed as young as two years old. This disease affects vision, hearing, memory, balance, and mobility. Those with MS can experience a myriad of symptoms, including double vision, impaired speech, extreme fatigue, and even paralysis.
Each day 3 more people are diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in Canada. We don’t know what causes this disease, and there is no cure.
But There is Good News (this is where the MS Society of Canada comes in)
So how does the MS Society of Canada help?
Their mission says it best: “To be a leader in finding a cure for multiple sclerosis and enabling people affected by MS to enhance their quality of life.”
An exciting initiative that I want to share with you is the partnership between the MS Society of Canada and Multiple Sclerosis Scientific Research Foundation. Together, these two organizations are funding a $3.8 million collaborative grant to research the complex interplay between degeneration and inflammation in multiple sclerosis. As the President of the MS Society of Canada, Yves Savoie says: “There has never been a more hopeful time in MS research.”
On a more local front, our local chapter, Central Vancouver Island, provides very important support services to those who are living with MS. This vital community resource offers information and referrals, an exercise subsidy program and equipment assistance, plus a legal advocacy program, and self-help and support groups which meet regularly.
Because of the MS Society of Canada, and their local chapters, no one has to face MS alone.
How Can We Help?
First, like and share this post on Facebook. By doing so, you’re showing REW your support in this proposal to donate the $3,000 to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada for the month of May. In the spirit of this month being MS Awareness Month, I’d like to get this post in front of as many people as possible, and inspire conversations about this disease. May 30th is World MS Day; it would be amazing to recognize this day by presenting a cheque from REW to our local Central Vancouver Island chapter.
