Something Non-Real-Estate.... Because, hey... it's Saturday!
Posted Apr 1, 2007 @ 1:22 am, Viewed by 505 Visitors, Read 508 Times. So, it's Saturday night and I'm sitting here, beer in hand, and I thought I'd share something. Just in case it's become "all-real-estate-all-the-time" in your life these days, I'd like to show you something different.
In late 2000 I got a job working at a picture-framing shop in Vancouver. On Saturdays we listened to a radio show called This American* Life (www.thislife.org) that's broadcast on NPR in the lower 48. (We got it on satellite radio from KPLU in Tacoma.) It's an hour-long talk radio show** that tells the stories of average people and all their oddities. Hmm... maybe that's not the best description...
From their site:
There's a theme to each episode, and a variety of stories on that theme. It's mostly true stories of everyday people, though not always. There's lots more to the show, but, like we said, it's sort of hard to describe.
I got hooked on this show and have been listening ever since. I've learned a lot about humanity from that show, and enjoyed every minute of it.
So, the real reason that I bring this up is because they've recently launched a re-designed web site to correspond with the 1st episode of their new TV show and I really like the job that they did on the re-design. The new site compliments their show perfectly - it's colourful and kind of quirky but not over-the-top. Take a look... what do you think?
Also, if any of you happen to give the show a chance and get hooked like I did, that wouldn't be bad either ;) They've got all the episodes from their 10 years on the air available for free on their site and a free weekly podcast of their new episodes as they air.
Cheers, and happy Saturday.
* For any Canadian readers out there, don't let the title scare you... the show's not overtly pro-American. It should really be called This North American Life.
** If the phrase "talk radio" makes you want to go clean your gutters because you'll find it more enjoyable and rewarding, (not only on a personal level but also a psycho-spiritual level,) than listening to an hour of your local talk radio station, I'll just say that This American Life isn't typical talk-radio. It's more like an hour of story-telling. There are no bickering politicians, inflated academics, or monotone lists of community events... just an hour of good stories. Take an hour off... sit back with a glass of scotch, beer, wine, whatever... relax, and enjoy.

*shakes fist*
I'll be sure to check it out. Talk-Radio has always intrigued me, but my mom kind of turned me off of the idea. She always listens to those therapists that have their own AM shows."My Child is overweight, what should I do?" Yuuuuughhhh.
This one seems a bit more interesting than that
So, I'm curious... for the two of you who commented and the other 111 people who've read my post so far... has anyone checked out the show? I'd be curious to hear your thoughts...
Hey Leif,
Unfortunately, my computer at home had a meltdown... so I won't be able to listen to it until my new one arrives. I'll keep you posted though
I've scheduled 6-hours off of work for sunday to play golf. Other than that, my time is work, sleep, kids & home work.

I'll have to check it out, thanks for the insight. P.S. - I thought Puerto Rico and Canada were states? That's what I get for surfing instead of attending class. P.S.S. - Just kidding - no hate mail from my Northern brothers and sisters please.
