When Google Throws a Pebble in the Pond...

...would you believe cows align North to South?

Now I am sure many of you reading this thought that this was going to be all about search engine rankings or alogrithm factors.  Sorry to disappoint, I just can't get myself in that type of mood.  Back to the cows - while the 'big G' has nothing to do with causation here their technology has provided insight.  Keep reading to find out, or jump to the link near the bottom of the post for the Scientific American article. Google, Google everywhere.

What isn't Google into these days?

The firm that brought the world a progressive and responsive search engine, contextual advertising, detailed analytics, satellite images, mapping technology and the soon to be deployed Android system.  Those are some of the more well known Google-cesses.  There are stories and tales out there that Google started to come up with so many business ideas it acutally caused iteself a significant amount of grief at one point -- too many irons in the fire.  You don't hear much about this currently, and most would agree that the 'G' is humming along at a good pace.

Innovation - The Best Part of Technology

One of the greatest effects of any good technology, product or service is what others do to innovate with it.  Linux and Windows are a few good examples of OS (operating systems) that allow for this innovation.  Now I don't want to cloud this discussion with open source versus closed products, and to be sure Linux is much different that Windows in that respect.  Innovation is always contrained by the system consisting of the technology or service.

Building Momentum: Apple and the iPhone App Store

The iPhone is another good example of a system promoting innovation; not directly related to the OS for the iPhone or iTouch but for development of utilities and applications to be used in conjunction with the OS.  Apple brought the App Store, and the tech community is bringing business utilities, crossword puzzle and other interesting (and sometimes quirky) applications.

Can Google Make All of it's Own Momentum?

No, but others can.  And firm's like Google count on it.  Take Google Maps for example: a great solution that wasn't the first in the industry.  But others have embraced it, many others, such as Social Networking sites and portals (Squidoo is one example) and of course IDX solution providers such as us here at REW.  The more that others pick up on it, the more the technology becomes entrenched.  Heck, if you can get something picked up on a popular Social Networking site let the good times roll.

One Application of Google Earth You Have to Know About

Here it is, the piece of pointless trivia that forms the core of rambling.  Researchers have used images from Google Earth to uncover the spectacular revelation that cows tend to align themselves North-South with the magnetic poles.  The article from Scientific American can be found here, and I have to tip my digital hat to the German group that made the discovery.  Oh, and go easy on those poor cows, they deserve more credit than we give them.  We orient ourselves somewhat aimlessly, while they "moove" according to an innate sense.
