The Second Chapter - Lighter Side of REW

Welcome to what is the first official post in the Lighter Side of Real Estate Webmasters.  Don't ask why Chapter #2 is the first post, it involves a long and complicated story about work, finance and me being lazy.  So, sit back, top up your beverage and buckle into your desk chair. Canada, eh'?

Canada.  Oh Canada.  The land where everyone lives in the snow, it is never warm and you have to wear a touque no matter the season.  There are some positives about living in Canada:

  • Free health care
  • Elections are quick
  • Free health care
  • The welfare system pays a good rate... and dental coverage to boot
  • Everyone is nice

Okay, that last one is a farce.  My rule of thumb is the further one gets from an ocean the nastier people get.  Sure, there are exceptions to the rule.  But it works because we live next to the water.

What else is good about Canada?

Some good reasons to live in Canada

As promised in the introductory Lighter Side post we will stick to English.  Woot!

Canada has provinces.  For those in our audience that are in the US think this way: province = state.  Thankfully we don't have more than 10 provinces (and two territories + Nunavut... lets stay away from the exceptions - it is confusing).  Why spend all that time learning 50+ states and capitals...

Some good reasons -- the highlights -- to living in various provinces throughout Canada as seen in mass e-mails throughout Inboxes around the world:

British Columbia
a. Vancouver -- 1.5 million people and two bridges... you can do the math
b. Stand on any street corner and throw a rock to hit three different Starbucks locations
c. Your $400K home is only a 6 hour drive from downtown

Alberta
a. You can exploit pretty much any natural resource imaginable
b. After exploiting said resources the province still runs a major deficit in tough economic times
c. Taxes in Alberta are 5% instead of approximately 200% for the rest of Canada

Ontario
a. You live in the centre of the universe and lay claim to Toronto
b. Ontario, and Ontario alone, decides who will win the federal elections
c. Your $400K home is actually pretty much a dump

Newfoundland
a. The workday is about 2 to 3 hours long
b. It is socially acceptable to wear your hip waders to a wedding (even your own)
c. If you do something stupid you have a built-in excuse, according to the rest of the country

The next topic

Lets not give this away; after all, it is only two months past the holiday season and we like to think of these blog posts as "presents" for our community.  Presents are supposed to be a surprise - but what is a surprise without a little hint first... some anticipation...  in light of this I leave you with "shaky hands and frequent trips to the indoor latrine".

See you back here in early March for our next chapter in the Lighter Side of REW...

Do you have a topic you want poorly researched and written about?

Bring it to our attention, comments are a great way to do this.  If you have a burning desire to see something in digital print that no one else wants to write we can do it (and a poor job of it, at that).  Worried about posting a request publicly... send a PMs or e-mail.  Then I can post it for you with your name in big, bold, red letters...

Thanks for stopping by my blog, don't hesitate to contact me or leave a comment below.  I am always happy to answer specific questions, talk shop or just shoot the breeze.  I'll be here often, but you can also find me on the forum of in the office.

For general questions related to the real estate industry the forum is the place for you.  If you haven't already, signup and become a member of our forums -- a great place to find answers and ask questions.

I want a scapegoat costume! Looks nice and warm for these long, chilly BC workdays.

Early March, that's like Monday or Tuesday right   Maybe for a future topic you can write about what it's like to live on an island? Ooh or talk about the different kinds of bowling alleys you have - besides the regular 10 pin there was some other type we heard about up there.

Good post Ryland. I love some of the highlights of living in some of the provinces!  I didn't know the centre of the universe was in Ontario.

Bowling... CGT you must be referring to that crazy 5 pin game we have up here, 'eh?

And Justin, shame on you for not realizing that Toronto, ON, is the centre of the universe.  You must not be a big hockey fan -- CBC Sports looks to the Maple Leafs schedule before setting up Hockey Night in Canada each week.  If Toronto isn't playing, well, why the heck should anyone in Canada be watching hockey?
