How to remove IE7

Folks,

We are not trying to flame Microsoft here.

The reason we are providing this tutorial is that some of our customers were very dismayed to find out that they had been forced to install IE7.

We at Real Estate Webmasters understand that the roll-out of IE7 has been enforced by Microsoft worldwide, and because of this users worldwide are seeing broken websites.

The publication of this next generation browser has changed the way the code is interpreted.
This has caused things like navigation links, text formatting and site layouts to appear in different and sometimes broken ways.

We will repair our clients websites for this new browser and are also sorry that this has caused any extra expense as this will be billable time.

This tutorial will go through the steps to uninstall the IE7 browser from your PC if you desire to go back to IE6 for the mean time.

IE7  will not go away however and this is not a good long-term solution. There are many users worldwide that are unaware or don't care that this new browser has been installed. They are seeing the same behaviour you are.

First we need to go to your Control Panel and get this ball rollin

You will need to choose the "Start" button then "Control Panel"

Then choose "Add or Remove Programs"

Scroll down the list of programs until you find "Windows Internet Explorer 7"

Choose the "Remove" button on the left to start the uninstall.

This will bring up the following window.

Select "Next from the dialog and the uninstall process will begin.

The wizard will then automatically:
  • Inspect the current configuration
  • Check for the necessary disk space
  • Stop Services
  • Restore Catalogs
  • Run processes before uninstall
  • Update the registry
  • Do some cleanup

Once the uninstall is finished you will see the following screen.

If you do not check the little box labeled "Do not restart now" your machine will auto-reboot.

Now IE7 is no longer on your PC

I hope that this has helped you and if you have any questions or comments please feel free to post.

Take care till next time

I can see why you are the "highest rated blog." Nice article. Very useful. Having said that, I like some of the new features of IE7, so removing it will take some consideration.

Just to clarify.. IE7 isn't broken... The sites that only work under IE6 are broken. IE7 fixes a number of bugs to become more standards compliant.

I tried to uninstall IE7 via the procedure described here, but it didn't work. Add/Remove Programs now shows no trace of IE7, but it's still present on my machine (running XP), i.e. it launches when I click on the IE icon on the taskbar or double-click on the desktop icon. It's like a virus that refuses to die! Any ideas?

Positively infuriated at the theft of yet more real estate. Can't remove the useless "Live Search," cannot turn toolbars off, "HOME" button is poorly placed... I could just go on. Again and again, MS foists features upon us that are counter-productive. Question is, when removing IE7, does it revert to IE6 or is that another re-install to deal with? Sigh: even those of us who have long loved MS are becoming evermore turned off. Such coprophilic behavior. DOUBLE THANKS to RealEstateWebmasters for caring enough to share. Very decent of you.
