***End of an Era***
Posted Jan 5, 2007 @ 1:19 pm, Viewed by 592 Visitors, Read 593 Times.I have just watched the news conference announcing the resignation of Bill Cowher as the coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers! I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, left in 1992 and returned to the area for a year in 1994. I watched with my game jersey and terrible towel. As a Steeler fan, this decision disappoints me much more than our less than stellar performance this season. Cowher, another born and raised Pittsburgh guy, is 49 years old and says that is time for him to enjoy his family.
He said, among many other noteworthy things, that "...you can take a person out of Pittsburgh, but you cannot take the Pittsburgh out of a person..." He made a career of hard work fueled by passion for what he did and went on to show genuine humility and gratitude for his opportunity. He will be missed.
I cannot help but admire his decision when you consider that he cited his family and his desire to be a part of it before his daughters begin families of their own. I have a written business plan and it involves being able to do just as Bill did when I am 50. (9 more years). I do not intend to "retire", but rather to be in a position to take some time off, while I am still able to enjoy it, and enjoy the many blessings in my life.
I only hope I can do it with as much class and peace of mind as I watched today.

most memorable? no one moment, but he mentioned in his press conference that he was most proud of bringing home playoff games to Pittsburgh, for the excitement it generated over the years. I agree with him, it gets electric, and having traveled all over the east coast, I can attest to the fact that there is a Steeler bar in EVERY city! In Venice it is Beef O'Brady's at Jacaranda and Tamiami Trail. I have a neighbor that has painted his driveway yellow with the Steeler logo.... so my best memory is alive and ongoing, whenever I meet another fan wherever I am....and we are EVERYWHERE!
I was sad to hear the news as well, but I was relieved to hear that he's "resigning" and not going to coach another team...yet. I agree, I've been in a few different cities myself and there's always a Steeler bar, sometimes more than one! Now we wait to see who his replacement will be. Insider Wisenhunt? Or Grimm? Or they will go outside?
My feeling is Wisenhunt to Atlanta, where he is from, and Grimm, native of Scotdale in SW Pa and Pitt Alumni to Head Coach
Enjoyed the post, Sam. Also waiting with "baited breath" to hear who the Steelers and Rooneys will select. Am hoping for one of the home-town boys. Fingers crossed!
I just found out that Ken Wisenhunt signed with Arizona. How disappointing. I imagine they'll run with Russ Grimm now, but we'll just have to see.
