A Cotton Plant and a Short Sale

Today was a day like most others. Up at 6:00am (we have a new 5 month old addition to the family), off to the computer by 6:30am to catch up on Facebook and Twitter, and by 7:00am looking at real estate related emails, and new buyer and seller prospects that have filtered in over the past 12 hours or so.

At about noon I received a call from a potential homebuyer who would like to see a home down in Tolleson. This was a pretty typical call, the buyer had seen a short sale on our website listed at $75,000 and wanted to get in to see the home asap. Also typical, was the fact that the home comped out at approximately $150,000 and the seller and listing agent had decided to drop the price down to $75,000 to generate an offer prior to the Trustee's Sale set for the middle of December. It turns out that this short sale was the nicest $75,000 home I have ever seen.

At this point you're probably wondering where the cotton plant fits into this post? Well, on the way down to show the short sale, I passed a cotton field south of the I-10 freeway and 99th avenue. It occured to me that I had never seen a cotton plant prior to moving to Arizona in 1997, and for those who have never lived in the south, chances are you have never seen a cotton plant either. Besides, cotton is a cool subject. Most likely you're sitting in front of your Commodore 64 or Apple IIe wearing cotton right now. That is, unless you're currently rocking a polyester leisure suit, or getting ready to head out on the bike in your neon green lycra spandex getup.

Cotton actually has a pretty neat history in Arizona. In the early 1900's tire companies such as Goodyear, Firestone and Dunlop relocated their factories to AZ to take advantage of the cotton crop.

Here's a few pictures of the cotton plant for those interested, and a few additonal pics I threw in for good measure :)

Beautiful Arizona sunset.

Ahh, here's the little guy who keeps Dad busy during the early hours of the day. He had a rough first four months, but as you can see, he's doing great and can't wait for a visit from Santa!

Barry,

I spent 23 years growing cotton and it is an amazing plant.  Bet you didn't know that your money is made from the very short staple fibers of cotton or even that Lay's Potato Chips have such a great flavor because they are fried in cotton seed oil.

That is a beautiful field of cotton you have in the pictures, but has stuck leaves on the plants.  A crop that has been defoliated properly (and mother nature can screw you on that too) will shimmer and shine in bright white across the horizon - check this out  http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=1fCfzbiVqCY

That John Deere machine is pure genius, but quit using words like "defoliated" that I don't understand. I went to a state school you know. I had to go to an online dictionary to look it up.

I've always thought cotton plants are cool, along the lines of orange, lemon and grapefruit trees. Mother Nature is amazing.
