Being Schooled

About 3 weeks ago I started attending Vancouver Island University (formally Malaspina Univ-College). I applied for their Fine Arts program back in August and magically got in. (I REALLY didn't expect to get in. My portfolio was less than impressive; not to mention I brought it in a plastic thrifty's bag.)

I'm shooting for a Minor Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree.. and then for the Diploma of Visual Arts. I believe it's 2 years for the Minor Bachelor and 4 for the Visual Arts Diploma. Should be an interesting 6 years, that's for sure.

The classes I'm in at the moment are 2D Design, History of Western Art I and Drawing.

Art History is definitely my favourite.. and Drawing is a very close second. 2D is starting off slow but I think it will get more interesting after a few more classes.

Anyway, I just wanted to share a couple pictures I have done in my drawing class. They are charcoal, still life drawings on just regular big sheets of white paper.

If you can guess what they are, you get brownie points.

Very nice Nick. I know exactly what those are. Top one: algorithm for Google. Bottom one: algorithm for Yahoo.

Ha! Clever. I didn't think ANYONE would get it

The top one is of some cat figurines and a large animal's skull.  Maybe a horse?

The bottom one is crumpled up box of cigarettes?

How did you figure that out Tampa?  Now I see why the results of the two are so different.  LOL

First, congrats on being accepted.  My son's girlfriend is also going for fine arts.

The top pic looks like a still life of a hoofed animal, skull and a chincilla

The bottom one looks like some kind of holster and saddle bag or something

But the algorithm guess was very clever!

Thanks!

The top picture is a figurine of a horse.. a horse skull and a figurine of a pig. The bottom one is a close-up picture of a bunch of paper bags.

Dang!  I always get plastic.

And that roly poly thing sitting on the chair doesn't look like a pig!

lol.. I must be a great artist if you're seeing a chair and I didn't draw one

The horse skull looks like it's sitting on the arm of a chair with a sheet draped over it.  It looks like a chair back behind the guinea pig - I mean pig.

ha! Pig! It's a pig!

I can see what you mean about the chair though.
