In January, Pigeon Forge hosts the 18th annual Wilderness Wildlife Week. This has become one of the areas most popular annual events, and consists of nine days of nature hikes, seminars, and displays.
There are nearly one hundred volunteer scientists and other experts on wildlife, nature, and conservation on hand to lend thier respective expertise. There are usually 40-50 planned hikes that range from leisurly nature strolls to overnight excursion to majestic Mt. LeConte. Registration is limited and takes place the day before the planned hike. Transportation is provided to various points in the park. The event headquarters is Music Road Hotel and Convention Center at 303 Henderson Chapel Rd. Pigeon Forge, TN 865-429-7350
Every year in February, Gatlinburg hosts the Special Olympics Winter Games at Ober Gatlinburg Ski Resort. Athletes from 11 years old and up compete in Alpine skiing, and ice skating events. The first day is reserved for coaching and training and the competition starts the next day from 8:30 to 4:00PM. The top three finishers win respective Gold, Silver, and Bronze, with all the remaining participants receiving ribbons. Closing ceremonies are held the last day. This is just another one of the free events for spectators that make the Smokies a family friendly place to live and visit.
