Real Estate Referrals How and Why

I have been going through a period of an unusual number of referrals of late. Some from major distances away. I thought the timing would be good to talk a little about how and why referrals are such an important part of the real estate profession.
The referral system in place in the Real Estate profession has many benefits for your clients and as a Realtor you are in a better position to research real estate professionals in the area to which your client is moving. There is of course the fact that when you refer your client to a good realtor in the area they are moving to, you stand to make a commission. That however I feel to be the minor factor in the referral scenario.
By taking the time to line your client up with a realtor who will work to look after the clients best interest as hard as you would have, you are providing an incredibly valuable service to your client.
How, when and why should you pass a client to another realtor? Why is the first question begging an answer, but the answer is simple. When I (due to geographical or knowledge base reasons) am no longer the best choice for my client to deal with it is in the best interest of all parties for me to seek out the realtor who best suits the needs of my client and ask them if they accept refferrals.
When is another good question, again the answer is fairly simple. When I cannot properly meet the needs of a given client it is now time to research a good referral partner in order to continue to assist my client as best I can.
How is a question which is often not thought through to it's logical conclusion. How to seek out a realtor suitable to work with my client is not as simple as looking to see who has the most signs in a given area. That would be one indicator and make the realtor look to be a go getter. On the other hand that realtor may not be the best choice from your clients point of view. You are looking for a realtor with a good track record of successful deals and satisfied customers. A little research on your part can make your clients complete sales process much smoother and more enjoyable.
