Internal Linking More Important Than External Inbound Links?

This morning, I came across this article regarding the strength of an internal linking structure and RSS includes.  This author claims internal linking is much more relevant than many forms of inbound links.  Here is a quote from the article:

"I'm going to step out on a limb here and suggest that internal linking matters more than reciprocal links, possibly more than social media links such as Digg and Del.icio.us links matter and maybe even as much as (javascript and flash) widget links and in some cases, more than (wimpy) link bait (as practiced by most) matters.

How sites link to their own content internally tells the search engines more about what matters most on a site than almost any other cue (save title tags). "  Read on.

Internal linking is definitely important, however to suggest that it is more important than inbound links from other websites is rediculous.

Yup, I wondered about that! That is why I quoted that portion of the article, as I was surprised as well. However, the author is correct in that little is written on internal linking. At least 'little' relative to the enormous number of articles written on external inbound linking.

Well... the article doesn't say all inbound links, but RECIPROCAL, SOCIAL, SCRIPT BASED and BAITS, which I tend to agree with as especially Google is very good at recognizing these link types and does not assign a lot of relevance to them.

Understood, and point well taken. However, Mike Valentine does reference 'link bait' which I would assume is a reference to inbound links. Personally, I believe Mike is simply introducing a concept for further consideration. I think his intentions were to emphasize the importance of internal linking. And with that he did a great job!
