We Are All Doomed to be Google Employees

Google is stepping up it's query for a piece of the real estate pie.  In Thursday's Official Google Blog, Google suggests the consumer simply use their housing search tool.  What's next?  A search tool to find a Realtor who will let the consumer in the house and fill in the necessary blanks in the paperwork?  Yup, all for a few hundred bucks!  Folks, I am beginning to think real estate agents will become an occupation of the past.  Hmm, in Disneyland they still employ horse and buggy drivers, don't they?  :)

I've been seriously wondering where all this change and real estate 2.0 is going to end up and it seems scary to me. It could end up like listed garage or yard sales eventually with nary a realtor involved.

No, I don't agree. Agents will always be needed. Some people CAN sell their own home, but some people (buyers AND sellers) will always want to work with an agent to reassure them, hold their hand, walk them thru the process, or just to DO IT so that the clients don't have to. Why does my husband call a dry waller when he CAN do the work himself? Because the professional can do it faster and better, and my husband can make more sticking to the real estate.

True, however, one must consider Supply and Demand economics. If more and more consumers do the work themselves (which they are), then the demand for Real Estate Agents decreases. Real Estate Agents will then be required to lower rates to be competitive, as the same number of agents will be competing for fewer clients.
