End Of The Line For Real Estate Agents?

I received my weekly copy of the Washington REALTORS® Newsletter and usually there is a good article or two inside. This week's edition was no exception. Bill Miles posts an article on The End Of The Line For Real Estate Agents and discusses the current market and the shift towards home owners' self reliance in selling/buying their own home without the use of a real estate agent. Miles illustrates the need for real estate agents to make adjustments factoring in the changing marketplace by specializing in an area(s) of expertise to accommodate the changing market climate. I would recommend the article, as the article addresses a concern I have had for some time that real estate agents are slowly being replaced by the internet, FSBO information and resources, and the big real estate houses (HomeGain, etc.).

That was a great article...I especially liked the analogy of real estate agents to stock brokers. I do believe it will take more of this course versus the travel agent analogy. Buying a house is a big decision and one that, I think, people will continue to rely on professionals to guide them the process. However, we must come to grips with the changing marketplace and adapt. I am inclined to believe that agents who are involved here at REW "get it" more than the rest.
Thanks for posting that Joe, good information. I also have been concerned by what I call the commoditization of Realtors. That is the perception that all Realtors are the same, which most defiantly they are not. I think companies such at homegain greatly contribute to the commoditization of Realtors and every chance I get I try to get other Realtors to stay away from Homegain and the other companies of it's type.
That is a good article although I have found that with the current decline in the market, people are looking for professional representation more and more. The trend seems to be HIGHER listing commissions and LESS people trying to sell FSBO.

That's certainly an interesting article but the ideas about niche marketing are nothing new. The most successful real estate agents I've met in the past 10 years have always been niche marketers. I also always have to question the motives of the writings behind somebody who works for a division of a company looking to get their hands into the cookie jar. (Write about something enough times and it becomes mainstream, right?)
