In light of some recent safety news with real estate agents, I wanted to post an entry on real estate agent safety. I am a former U.S. Marine whose specialty was security, plus I have several years of civilian security experience and a few college minors in Criminal Justice/Pre-Law. Safety is important to me. I geared up to do an exhaustive post on safety and early (fortunately) in my research I came across this free download for real estate agent safety. Saved me a lot of work, as this pamphlet is excellent and a must read by women and men alike.
National Association of Realtors® | Real Estate Safety Council
Free Safety Pamphlet from Washington Realtor®
This brochure is not just for women, but for men as well. From the first page of the brochure:
In a National Association of REALTORS story, Timothy Dougherty writes of Maria Garcia, a New York real estate agent who was showing a house in Brentwood N.Y. in 1995 when Donny Bates, a paroled convict with a history of mental illness, approached her with interest in listing his house for sale. Instead of meeting Bates in her office she went alone with a stranger to a strange house. Bates slit her throat with a knife. Incidents like this don’t just happen in New York – and they don’t only happen to women.
In January 2001, Mike Emert, a Bellevue based real estate agent and a young family man, was also brutally killed with a knife. Although Mike apparently put up a struggle, he died of multiple stab wounds in the home he was showing. Mike’s death shocked the citizens of the Northwest and galvanized the support of his co-workers and the entire real estate community. Mike’s tragic death inspired the formation of the Real Estate Safety Council. This non-profit group organized the production and distribution of this brochure, safety posters, and a website dedicated as a safety information resource. In addition, the Council is assisting the National Association of REALTORS in it’s efforts to produce a safety video that can be made available to all real estate professionals.
Let me add a few tips Colleen and I live by. Certainly more extreme than most safety recommendations. Hey, but life is too short to take chances, especially ones for money!
- Under no circumstances do Colleen and/or I meet with anyone we have not positively identified (i.e., name, address, work info, credit qualifications, etc.). No exceptions.
- Colleen and/or I never meet alone with the opposite sex. I realize this one is controversial, but we live by this one as well.
- Colleen and/or I never do open houses. We believe open houses are for real estate agents to garner leads, therefore we do not put ourselves at risk.
There ya go. Our contribution to the safety of your life. Consider downloading the free safety pamphlet today. When working this weekend, be safe!
