Plans call for Red Mountain to become next wine destination.

BENTON CITY -- Nearly a million visitors could pour onto Red Mountain each year in the near future, and Benton County officials and Red Mountain winemakers want to be ready for the rush.

They believe development could transform Red Mountain into the next wine mecca, like California's Napa Valley. County officials and Mid-Columbia business, industry and government leaders are trying to steer the area's development toward a high-end wine touring destination.

The plans call for dozens more wineries, a state park, walking trails, a European-inspired wine village, bed and breakfasts, high-end restaurants, a wine shop and even horse-drawn carriages. The county plans to hold a public meeting on the $250,000 Red Mountain plan Wednesday in Kennewick.
