In order to use feng shui practically, a practitioner should have knowledge about astronomy, its astrological influences, Confusion classic, and the magnetic fields surrounding the earth. A feng shui practitioner should also know about environmental factors that may influence building structures internally and externally. Basically, feng shui is the art of placing building structures in the perfect surrounding for its occupants to enjoy good health and attract wealth.

The origin of feng shui goes back to the West Han dynasty in China. Believers of feng shui during this era think that the earth has life and energy because it is a living thing. The energy of an area would depend on its surroundings and topology. Ever since feng shui has been adapted by the Chinese architectural style, many people, rich and poor alike, has benefited from it. In ancient China, most cities were planned according to its physical surroundings so you can observe concentric rectangles which are located near hills, valleys, lakes, and courtyards. The ancient practitioners want to ensure that the natural and the man-made structures will coexist with each other positively.

Even before a lot of modern discoveries about feng shui were made, feng shui was also used to enhance the harmonius relationsip among loved ones and family members. Usually, the left side of a structure is used to represent Yang (mala force) which is said to connect the forces from heaven. Meanwhile, the right side of the structure represents Ying (female force) which is connected to the forces of earth. Feng shui practitioners need to find a balance between the Ying and the Yang.

For example, built areas including elevation and sun-lit roofs are considered to be Yang force while empty areas and set-back structures are said to be connected with the Yin. When a structure leans toward any of the two principles, the building can be considered imbalanced so proper feng shui should be practiced.
