Green Building in Tampa? What is it and Why do we care? The green building movement is all about using our resources efficiently to create a clean environment for ourselves. This includes: efficient use of energy, recycled building materials and using fewer chemicals, low impact use of land, efficient use of soil and water, and improved indoor air quality.
Green building of homes now accounts for nearly $2 billion in annual spending in the US and is expected to grow to at least $6.5 billion by 2010. In Tampa Bay, Oldsmar based Nohl Crest Homes is the area’s first green homebuilder. Quoted from their site "Every new Nohl Crest Florida home is now a green home ~ built with the environment in mind. As a green builder, our construction practices and materials have been designed and selected to conserve the earth’s valuable and limited resources. We employ sustainable building practices in the creation of our semi-custom Tampa area homes. We install highly energy- and water-efficient appliances, landscaping and other features. We use flooring, paints and other materials that create more healthful living spaces for those who call our houses their homes. In fact, Nohl Crest homes are built to the exacting standards of the Florida Green Building Coalition."
Do green building materials cost more? Honestly...yes, they do. Still, we should recognize that green materials are generally of higher quality as well. They're often produced by independent manufacturers (rather than multi-national corporations) and may not have attracted a significant market yet to benefit from economies of scale. But when you consider them on the basis of total life-cycle savings they virtually always prove to be of better value.
