De-Mystifying Feng Shui for the Home

You might giggle when you hear the term “Feng Shui”, either because the word sounds funny or because you relate it some mystical, new age, mumbo jumbo.  But the applications of Feng Shui are very solid.  Basically, Feng Shui refers to the proper order and organization of your life and your surroundings to maximize your potential for health, wealth, success, happiness, etc.  Open your mind for a few hundred words and try to see the practical side of Feng Shui.

I have heard people reference the addition of crystals and wind chimes in key areas to help keep more money coming into the house and less going out, and then swear it works.  You could take the “magic” out and explain that the act itself reminded them to be more responsible with their money and that could be true.  But since the result is the same, you cannot deny it works.

A more tangible example would be a guy tripping over his kids’ shoes in the garage every morning, groggy and on his way to work.  It sends him off on his day grumbling and irritated. This has a negative impact on the productivity of his day.  What if he moved those shoes out of his path and into a more appropriate place?  Suddenly he makes it to the car without obstacle and his mind is free to brainstorm,  recall pleasant things, and mentally review his plans for the day, etc.  Mood is improved and so is work performance.  That is how Feng Shui works.  It helps you identify what is chipping away at you that either don’t recognize or have simply accepted.

With regards to home buying, a common concern of the Feng Shui Enthusiast  is the reason the current residents are leaving.  At first thought it might sound simply superstitious to want to avoid a house of divorce for fear of the same fate.  But what if the house has some flaw, akin to the shoe situation, that a couple does not even realize, that causes them to fight a lot?  That would be considered negative Feng Shui.  The flaw may never be identified because no one knows to look for it, but negative energy flows through the house because of it, chipping away at the inhabitants.

Even if you are a person who does not buy into the idea of positive and negative energy and the like, remember that it stems from something very real like tripping over scattered shoes or 1 bathroom for 6 people.  Then next time you stumble upon a how-to article for buying or organizing your house Feng Shui style, you might find more valuable information that you thought.
