Max Planck

With the recent success of securing the Scripps Research Institute at the Florida Atlantic University campus in Jupiter under their belts, the Palm Beach County commissioners resolved to make a similar proposal to yet another research company. In 2007, their offer to the Max Planck Society was accepted, making the Florida Atlantic Campus in Abacoa of Jupiter the new site for the first Max Planck Society institute on United States soil. With a promise of almost $87 million over the course of a decade from Palm Beach County, and an additional $190 million from the state of Florida, the international research institute will now call the FAU campus home, and The Scripps Research Institute it's neighbor. Said Peter Gruss, president of The Max Planck Society, "The Max Planck Florida institute would give us an independent foothold in the world's most important country for science."

As a leader in the field of biotechnology research, The Max Planck Society has high hopes for its new American facilities in Jupiter. They will build a 100,000 square foot facility comprised of laboratories and research centers, and bring on some of the most talented researchers in the bio-imaging industry. In addition, Max Planck intends on creating a "visiting scientist" program" made possible by providing additional lab space for prominent scientists from around the globe.

As the Palm Beach County Commissioners had hoped, The Scripps Research Institute Florida has been a major draw for attracting other similar companies. In fact, Max Planck Society spokespeople cited the opportunity to share a campus with Scripps Florida the main reason they chose to accept an offer in the south Florida location. Both institutions are recognized world wide as leaders in the field of biomedicine. In another comment by Peter Gruss, he referred to Scripps and Max Planck as "a dream team for innovative basic research in biomedicine." Collaboration opportunities between Scripps Florida and Max Planck Florida bring unlimited possibilities for potential research breakthroughs in the fields of bio-imaging, biomedicine, and biotechnology.

Palm Beach County's deal with The Max Planck Society was ultimately approved in July 2008. Max Planck will indeed be located in close proximity to Scripps Florida, and like Scripps, Max Planck will prove itself a boost to the local economy. Florida is working on becoming a booming biotechnology research region in order to attract high wage jobs to the local career market, and ensure the health and strength of the long term economy. The addition of the Max Planck Society directly contributes to this effort, as the institution is expected to immediately create 135 new jobs with high income earning potential. As part of the deal, The Max Planck Society has also agreed to give back to the community by pledging 3 percent of its annual royalties to the Palm Beach County education system for a span of two and a half decades (from the year 2012 to the year 2038). In the meantime, Max Plank will focus on building and perfecting its new laboratories and research facilities, and bringing some of the best research professionals and biomedical scientists on board at the institution.
