Outer Banks goes Corporate

Well it was bound to happen. More franchises are gaining a foothold in the Outer Banks. New for this summer are Dunkin Donuts, Rita's Water Ice and Starbucks Coffee. All these chains are bound to put much pressure on local businesses. Local companies like Duck Donuts and many of the local coffee and breakfast shops will now be in competition with the national giant. It will be interesting to see how Dunlin Donuts will affect tocal business. The impact of Rita's and Starbucks will most likely be less due to their locations in Southern Shores. Dunkin Donuts has two locations on US-158 that will offer them maximum exposure.

Trying to operate against a behemoth like Dunkin Donuts will be a major challenge. Being part of a franchise network offers its owners better access to advertising and profit margins. The biggest loser will be the Outer Banks. Now ready made products will come in the backdoor and go out the drive-thru window. Companies that take pride in their homemade bagels or donuts will feel the pinch as it is difficult to compete against someone who is able to produce things on the scale of Dunkin Donuts. Hopefully, the local business owners will tighten up their operations and get ready to face Dunkin Donuts head on. If not we will see the repercussions, locals put out of business.

As Outer Banks Real Estate continues to grow in popularity the area attracts more and more big corporate entities and I view this as a double edged sword. This can be good for the local economic system by providing jobs and options for shoppers but can also put the little guy out of business which I’m against. Time will tell how small business handles this.

William Yes, I do agree the expanded growth will continue to attract more corporations as the islands grow in density. I definitely think it a negative. Less of the money stays in the local area. No matter how you slice it, with corporations part of the money goes to the corporate headquarters. What can you do though? Consumers want the corporations.
