Sustainable Tourism on the Outer Banks
Posted May 15, 2008 @ 6:58 pm, Viewed by 281 Visitors, Read 285 Times. With Memorial Day just around the corner I was sitting thinking about the official start of summer 2008. Summer brings a boom atmosphere to many resort communities. Here on the Outer Banks it is no different. A beautiful day today had me day dreaming. My thoughts drifted not to this summer but future summers. As an Outer Banks property manager it is sometimes hard not to think about future seasons. Sitting thinking about this got me thinking about enviromentally friendly tourism.
I believe it is the duty of the entire Outer Banks community to work towards sustainable tourism. The future effects of global warming could have disastrous effects on the East Coast's barrier islands. Sustainable or 'Eco' tourism definitely needs to be worked into the business plans of local entrepreneurs. Some local business owners have already moved in this direction. The owners of the Outer Banks Brewing Station recently installed a wind turbine. Hopefully the example they have set will be followed by more Outer Banks businesses.
I would be estactic, if the Outer Banks was to become the 'Gold' standard for enviromentally friendly tourism in the United States. Though we are a long way off, it could definitely become a reality. Each small step in the 'green' direction is something positive. Who knows perhaps some vacation property managers will start requiring their home owners to upgrade their lightbulbs? If each business did their part it would be amazing to see what would get accomplished. As Thomas Jefferson said, "Determine never to be idle. No person will have occasion to complain of the want of time who never loses any. It is wonderful how much may be done if we are always doing." The same thought could be applied to moving in a 'green' direction.
